Ban the Box is the name of an international campaign by civil rights groups and advocates for ex-offenders, aimed at persuading employers to remove from their hiring applications the check box that asks if applicants have a criminal record.
Since 2015 over 100 cities or countries and 18 states have removed questions about conviction history from their public employment applications.
All to often in my 25 years as a hospitality professional, I have seen young people as well as head of household family men and women. Working for an outside contractor with out health coverage, as well a s getting paid significantly less than would be if they worked directly for the company they were servicing. Simply because they made a mistake at one point in their life. If we are serious about closing the gap between rich and poor, we have to be serious about giving second chances. Its time we make Ban the Box federal law.
